Other Endangered Species in NL

Welcome to the Newfoundland Marten Website.

Newfoundland Marten, are a genetically distinct population of the more widely distributed American Marten, Martes Americana Atrata. The Newfoundland Marten is one of only fourteen native land mammals on this island. It is also one of the most rare animals on earth.

The population of marten on the island of Newfoundland was declared endangered by COSEWIC (The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada) in 1996. With approximately 300 marten remaining, this native species sits on the edge of extinction.

This website is an initiative of the Newfoundland Marten Education Committee, an actoin group of the Newfoundland Marten Recovery Team.
